Scheme name: Garsington Opera Pavilion
Practice: Snell Associates
Client: Garsington Opera
Photographer: Marcus Dawes

In the great English tradition of distrust of the new followed by rapid assimilation into permanency and subsequent listing, Garsington's design concept is based on a demountable 600-seat 'temporary structure' – it should come down every autumn, but the landowner likes it so much wants to keep it up after the first season.

Nonetheless, it is made of transportable elements requiring one cherry picker to put it together. Garsington is a great Fun Palace that Cedric Price can now smile down on.
