What is the RIBA Awards Programme?

Important note

It has been confirmed that the Olympic building marketing ban has been lifted. This means that the RIBA can now accept these as awards entries.

Please note that this does not include temporary structures.

Due to the lateness of this agreement the RIBA has agreed to extend the deadline for all London Olympic buildings only until midnight Friday 8 February.

The deadline for all other UK regions excl Scotland is midnight on Friday 8 February

The RIBA Awards programme champions and celebrates the best of British architecture. The RIBA has been giving awards for buildings since 1966. No matter the shape, size, budget or location, all RIBA Award winning-schemes set the standard for good, excellent and outstanding architecture all across the country.

The Regional and RIBA National awards are judged and presented locally and culminate in the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize presented every autumn. The RIBA awards reflect changes in architectural tastes, technology and aspirations, but at their core is a commitment to the understanding and enjoyment of buildings and spaces, whilst they continually set and reward new standards in British architecture.

For any member who wishes to submit a building that is based in Scotland you must visit our sister organisation, The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland| to submit a Scottish entry.

How does it work?

From 3 December 2012 RIBA chartered members and RIBA International Fellows are invited to submit their entries to the 2013 RIBA awards programme. There is one simple online entry process for all of our awards.

For our UK Nations and Regions (excluding Scotland), once a scheme is submitted it will be considered for Regional Awards and Regional special prizes (excluding Scotland and Northern Ireland), and if successful could also win an RIBA National Award, the winners of which will be announced at celebratory events across the UK on June 12 2013.

For our RIBA National award winners the journey continues after June with the selection of the National Special awards shortlists and the RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist and ends the year with the RIBA Stirling Prize event, where the final winners are announced and celebrated.

For members and fellows building outside of the UK, the same online entry process as above applies (with an additional A1 information board posted to the RIBA). Once a scheme is submitted it will be considered for either an RIBA EU Award or an RIBA International Award. If successful the winners will be announced on 12 June 2013 and showcased at the RIBA Stirling Prize event in October 2013. All RIBA International Award winners will compete for the RIBA Lubetkin Prize shortlist and the winner will be announced at the same event.

Judging and criteria – how it’s done and what the judges are looking for

Judging – UK Nations and Regions

Once all schemes in the UK have been submitted, ‘shortlisters’ will visit all schemes, then return to their regional RIBA Jury who will decide with the help of their recommendations which schemes will go on to be officially shortlisted and visited by the three person RIBA Jury.

If you are shortlisted you will be notified by the RIBA and a visit will be arranged where both the architect(s) and client will be asked to attend. If you are not shortlisted you will be notified in writing. We regret that at this stage feedback cannot be provided on individual entries.

Once all of the RIBA Juries have completed their visits, they will meet with the RIBA Awards Group, confirm their Regional Award and Regional Special Award winners (excluding Northern Ireland) and make their recommendations for RIBA National Awards. The RIBA Awards Group, will then reconvene to decide the RIBA National Awards, all winners will be announced at awards events across the country on June 12 2013.

The judges’ decision is final and awards will be made at their discretion (the organisers reserve the right not to make awards if there are no eligible candidates of the required standard.)

Judging – EU

Once all schemes outside of the UK have been submitted, the RIBA Awards Group will meet and shortlist EU schemes based on the material provided.

If you are shortlisted you will be notified by the RIBA and a visit will be arranged where both the architect(s) and client will be asked to attend. If you are not shortlisted you will be notified in writing. We regret that at this stage feedback cannot be provided on individual entries.

Once all EU visits have been completed the RIBA Awards Group will meet and decide RIBA EU Award winners. These will be announced on June 12 2013 and showcased at the RIBA Stirling Prize event in October 2013.

Judging – international

Once all schemes outside of the UK have been submitted, the RIBA Awards Group will meet and decide all RIBA International Awards based on the material provided, the winners will be announced on June 12 2013 and showcased at the RIBA Stirling Prize event in October 2013.

From the winners the RIBA Awards Group will shortlist four schemes which will comprise the RIBA Lubetkin Prize shortlist. These buildings will be visited by a two person jury and once the visits are completed they will meet with a larger jury chaired by the RIBA President to decide the winner which will be announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize event in October 2013.

Criteria

Every judge will be asked to consider each of the following points in relation to every scheme. Before any visits are made, every judge will read and digest the criteria below (given in alphabetical order) and study all the submitted materials. They will then visit a building, look in detail at all its aspects, interior and exterior etc, listen to the story that both architect and client have to tell, interrogate them about the process and its results. After discussion with fellow judges, they will arrive at their provisional judgements. Once all visits have concluded, the jury will meet for a final time, take those provisional judgements, apply the criteria once again and decide their awards.

The judges are looking for buildings that fulfil as many of the criteria featured as possible; they will use their local knowledge and professional expertise to evaluate the relevance of the criteria to individual schemes and judge accordingly.

  • Appropriateness of its structural and servicing systems
  • Budget – value for money
  • Capacity to stimulate, engage and delight its occupants, visitors and passers-by
  • Complexity of brief / degree of difficulty - its architectural ambition and ideas
  • Design vision. Is this reflected in all aspects of the design?
  • Extent of innovation, invention and originality
  • Fitness for purpose, especially in response to the client’s brief as reflected in the level of client satisfaction
  • Has it made a significant contribution to its immediate environment?
  • Response to the issues of accessibility and other social factors
  • Selection of materials and the way in which they are detailed
  • Size/space – but not in terms of m2, the spatial experience it offers
  • Sustainability – environmental and economic
  • Timetable – the project should not have gone over time without good cause
  • Type of contract e.g. traditional, design and build.
