The scheme emerged from a design competition to provide visitor facilities. Proposals by other architects neither threatened the existing historic structure, nor engaged with it. Hopkins's brave scheme succeeds in resolving the whole precinct of buildings in what is one of the most beautiful of all English cathedral closes.
