Kaleidoscope

This white modernist building, with its startlingly precise diagram, has had a cube-like volume removed from its frontal axis. This glazed void forms an intimate wooded garden whose southerly aspect ensures that light floods deep into the heart of the plan. The garden, as well as providing a secure play area for children, is enjoyed by three floors of consulting rooms, training rooms and offices with each floor colour coded to reference location from within and register an interest in polychromatics without. This childcare centre proffers an alternative solution to the barren architecture that too often results from a righteous 21st century obsession with privacy: what a pleasure to enter a coloured glass world of light, reflection, translucency and transparency.
