A generous budget of £1m has been used imaginatively to transform a neglected broad-walk on the north side of Old Street. Black terrazzo circles at differing heights define a new public realm. Some form the edges to flower beds around the two lines of mature plane trees, some are benches and some tables. Already vacant shops along the northern boundary have begun to let and the area seems well used by all ages. The best part of the scheme is to be appreciated after dark when the carefully-placed lighting, on tall posts between the trees, shines down on the paving casting shadows of the branches and leaves in a magical and cinematic way. This is truly transformative and a real delight.
