V&A Museum of Childhood

Museum of Childhood

Respect for the fabric of the original building and a sense of its historical importance (the structure was the first V&A building) underpin a cerebral approach to the task of making the collection more accessible both in bringing its access arrangements up to current standards and representing the objects in a clear narrative. The café remains at the heart of the building, a temporary installation on the original mosaic floor. A new lift connects all the levels. The new entrance portico is approached by a new ramp in the form of a shallow half-cone. Primary colours are out and the pastel shades of the nursery – calamine, peppermint, mustard – are in. The re-worked museum is a shrine to childhood.
