The aim of the new Art Gallery and Public Square is to provide a catalyst for the regeneration of Teeside. The well detailed glass and white limestone gallery draws people across the square, while the placing of the shop and café behind the front window draws them inside. Together these moves begin to make a cohesive piece of the city. The layout and circulation of the building are extremely legible. The grand stair rises through the four floors of the building. The artificially lit galleries are set in the centre of the building with service accommodation wrapped around them. Altogether it is a very elegant and enjoyable building which reconciles the urban aspirations of Middlesbrough with the need for a carefully crafted gallery.
