This elegant car park is one of the first buildings to be completed in the huge Paradise Street retail development. It deals successfully with the problem of how to make a multi-storey car park a meaningful part of the urban fabric. The architects have boldly cantilevered the vehicle ramp out from the silver louver-clad surface of the orthogonal building. Though based on sound principles of space use, this gives the building a strong sculptural form. The impression is of a building whose quality goes well beyond its budget and the materials used. The inventiveness extends to a wall dividing the bus stand from a sensitive police headquarters which is built in a series of angled panels and a screen of translucent fibreglass.
