This complex brief brought together a number of transport needs on a tight inner city site. The resulting scheme is an effective piece of urban design. The architects have used the gentle slope of the site to form an interior of changing height with easy links to the bus station outside. The slope also adds interest to a separate island shelter, which is expressed as a smooth glazed pavilion. Above the transport interchange itself is the multi storey car park. Vertical circulation is achieved by titling the floor plates, an arrangement subtly expressed on the outside in the fritted glass screen which hovers in front of the structure. The whole creates a changing and reflective façade that fits well into the surrounding streetscape.
