Private House in Edinburgh

Private House, Edinburgh

House ar Circus Lane

Despite its long gestation in planning this new-build mews house is fresh and inventive, with three bedrooms plus garage on the ground floor and a spatially complex and partially top-lit living/dining area on the first floor. A spiral stair provides a series of stopping-off places between various rooms and a geometric focus to the layout of the building. As with other projects by the same architects, there are references to Scarpa in the use of colour and in the detailing, but this is an original work that far exceeds the normal standard of new domestic architecture. As a template for sensitive but uncompromisingly modern urban infill within an historic street, Edinburgh’s city planners could do much worse than look to this small project for inspiration.
