The entrance to the new Student Services centre is formed where the two buildings meet in a glazed atrium. Meeting spaces are formed on the upper two floors, overlooking the atrium. The offices are open plan, fully occupying the triangular footprint.
The building has excellent sustainability credentials. A lime mortar was used for the brickwork. The roof rainwater is collected for grey water recycling; the concrete structure contributes to thermal stability, the lighting, heating and vent controls are run by BMS and extensive use was made of engineered timber as structural elements and frames, all sourced from sustainable forests. Photovoltaics were built into the pitched south facing part of the atrium roof glazing, providing both effective solar shading and electricity generation.
