The client selected Walters and Cohen on the basis of an earlier model school design they had developed for the DfES. A double-height spine contains the main social spaces: the library, adjacent to a multipurpose hall, which in turn connects to the ‘hub’, a flexible teaching space around which the individual classrooms are arranged. The hall’s location at the centre of the plan allows it to serve as the school’s assembly and dining space, as well as a community hall out of hours. The classrooms are beautifully conceived and executed. Each top-lit space enjoys views into the ‘hub’, access to its own washrooms and an external patio: a terrace shaded with timber screens. The result is a place that supports concentration and learning.
