Bourbon Lane is a brilliant example of how to achieve high quality and generous affordable housing, and create a bright new piece of city in an unpromising location. It was the result of an international competition run by CABE.
Set against the backdrop of Shepherd’s Bush huge new retail development, this housing scheme is rational, sustainable, liveable, delightful.
The buildings have simple geometric forms and maximize the southerly aspect of the site by creating entirely double-aspect dwellings, which makes them feel light and airy. Each has a garden, a generous roof terrace, or a balcony. The dwellings are comparatively spacious, and some of them have double-height living areas.
The project wonderfully demonstrates the value of thoughtful integrated architecture.
