This project is ingenious, delightful and genuinely surprising. The chief objective of the Centre for Film and Visual Media was to provide a range of purpose-designed spaces into which it could expand its activities. Located within a Grade 2 listed terrace, the project involved the refurbishment of the basement and ground floors of the original building, as well as a 2-storey 1970s extension. This extension houses an 80-seater cinema, a seminar room, office space, a viewing suite, and an open area for informal meetings. The college had a particular wish for the Centre to engender a sense of community, even commerciality, and give a strong sense of visual identity – and the architect has interpreted this brief in a wonderfully imaginative and spatially inventive way.
