An old joinery workshop in the backlands between two storey terrace houses had been demolished to create a site for two elegant new houses where the use of timber and finely detailed joinery was central to the success of the project. The client was the joiner and he was rightly proud of his work. No concessions have been made even though there were 27 party wall agreements.
The strong rectilinear geometry of the two houses is set within an irregular shaped site, the leftover corners creating elegant external courtyards. The vistas through the houses to these courtyards is imaginatively handled to create many interesting vistas. Ventilation is separated from the generous glazing by using ‘concealed’ opening flaps wherever necessary. The detailing of the cantilevered staircases is particularly satisfying.
