The new Arena and Convention Centre on Liverpool's Kings Waterfront provides a focal point for the City's capital of Culture celebrations – and a home for the 2008 RIBA Stirling Prize. It comprises a 10,000 seat arena with a very flexible layout, a conference centre with a 1350 seat auditorium and a 7600 m2 exhibition facility.
Large areas of glazing have created a legible and welcoming building with clear views into the building, particularly at night, and views out over the river from within. The building achieved a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'. Five wind turbines on the site provide 15% of the building's energy.
The Arena has provided Liverpool with another landmark on the Mersey and has been adopted by the Liverpool public with pride.
