The fine new Postgraduate Centre was delivered on time and within the constraints of a very limited budget as part of a masterplan for the University campus by the same architects.
The centre provides a light and uplifting learning space for postgraduate students. It also gives the department a ground floor presence within the campus. Environmental performance was a key design driver for the new building, which achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating. The south-facing façade responds to the potential for solar gain; aluminium louvres mitigate solar effects on internal spaces, and glazed solar chimneys make the most of the stack-effect to provide low-energy ventilation. Generous floor to ceiling heights and exposed concrete ceilings enhance the building's performance.
