The new building creates a strong façade to the street on one side and resolves complex and varied urban conditions on the other, while maintaining an internal clarity of organisation. Overall, it is well considered and organisationally precise.
In keeping with its university context, there is an external public route through the building, connecting it to the campus beyond. There is a generosity of public spaces to foster the faculty’s social culture.
Natural ventilation has been built into the building in a subtle and ingenious manner, so it is does not override the architecture but is it clearly part of it.
The stonework has been elegantly detailed and executed and the building has a strong formal elegance which feels entirely suited to its historic context.
