From the client and architects' decision to restore and maintain the original Arts Centre, to the quality of the construction of the extensive new-build, every decision has come together to form a singular place of quality.
The Centre addresses Orkney with a modest shop front. Sitting between the old stone warehouse and existing red timber building, the new zinc and glass building addresses the harbour with a subtle blend of the contemporary and the vernacular. Viewed from across the harbour, the new build can almost appear as a shadow behind the original.
In its remote and beautiful context this is a building of extraordinary sensitivity and emotive power. It brings to the community an arts centre of a small scale but with immense presence.
