The Lightbox aims to introduce the residents of Woking to the visual arts. It occupies an intriguing site tight alongside a dual carriageway to the south and a canal to the north. The exterior of the building is eye-catching, with cladding of anodized aluminium in graduated shades of gold; and of carefully-detailed timber boards. The glazing on the canal side is particularly sophisticated in displacement and in detail.
The building follows a simple functional programme: a stack of gallery spaces is accessed from a longitudinal circulation zone along one side of the building.
One of the most impressive aspects of the project was the commitment to energy conservation. Even the major gallery spaces have been engineered for assisted natural ventilation and humidity control.
