Re-shaping one of the most iconic motorway-side buildings in Europe which is loved by passers-by of many generations has its responsibilities. The design strategy for adaptation into new commercial uses is bold, bordering on brilliant. The interaction of conserved envelope and new insertions has great clarity. The “true-blue” spine insertion forms a whole group of design devices. It is an orientation device, service core, sprouting fin for the hotel and a symbol to the south approach, counterpoint to the historic tower to the north approach.

Setting the glazed walls to the offices in from the front of the building is a masterstroke, functionally remodelling the industrial box. It creates a stylish workplace with a practical colonnade, for shading, servicing and cleaning.
