Setting the library at the centre of a series of interlinking, informal historic school quads formed a good springing point. Marrying the new building to a Victorian one provided the next step in a surprising wedlock of new and old. The result demonstrates a highly imaginative and productive use of space skillfully and carefully carried through to the final detail.

The central design move of layering in plan the concourse, the light well and the existing building creates a holistic sequence. The light well transforms the potential for activity which radiate from it, unlocking the spaces in the old part.

Many new libraries and particularly school libraries suffer from the furniture being an afterthought. Here, just like an Aalto library, it is integral to the piece.
