Raasay has a small population but the needs of any other community. The requirement was for a multi-use hall, the solution a simple building formed by over-cladding a very large new shed with an untreated larch rainscreen, left to weather to a silvery grey.
By using the slope of the site and creating separate entrances to upper and lower halls, the building avoids the expensive infrastructure and the potential maintenance problems of a lift. The internal spaces are predominantly lined out in wood. A ground source heat pump with heat recovery minimises energy use. The glazing of the front elevation ensures that users always have a view of the constantly changing light and weather, of sea, of sky and of the blue hills of the Isle of Skye beyond.
