Conceived as part of a masterplan for The University of Wales to create a new campus beside the River Usk (with a secondary aim of regenerating the waterfront), this new building gathers together the Business, Technology, Art, Design and Media disciplines into a single collaborative environment under one large all-encompassing roof.
Accommodation includes heavily serviced sound and television studios, screening theatres, lecture theatres, learning support, exhibition space, teaching studios and academic offices.
The planning of the building is very well considered and fluidly knits together considerably diverse uses in a positive manner. Academic buildings have to earn their keep these days, which means a public internal street giving access to the performance spaces. This space also hosts student exhibitions and external revenue-earning exhibitions.
