North London Hospice - street view

The project is a charity-run day-care hospice, 40% funded by the Department of Health and takes the form of an oversized house on three levels. The building provides drop-in workshops, creative therapies and clinical appointments, as well as a hairdresser's salon, a rest room and a large open-plan kitchen for out-patients are suffering from a wide range of terminal diseases.

The architects have broken the mould of palliative care in adopting a familiar domestic language, both in the building form – two large pitched roof volumes and the use of a multi-coloured brick - as well as in the choice of material considerations. The result is a calm, caring environment seldom achieved by the default palette of safe materials and standard catalogue furniture.
