The plan is straightforward: workshop block to the north, creative industries studios overlooking the river, a teaching block to the south with the Learning Resource Centre (library) ‘hanging’ over the main entrance. Linking these are the refectory, restaurant and conference facilities.
Commissioning the new college traditionally (ie involving the professional team from the outset) allowed the design to evolve in consultation with the client and local planners. This ensured the best solution in terms of the plan, quality of teaching accommodation, circulation and orientation but also in delivering best value over the life of the building. The materials are refined and the detailing worthy of a corporate headquarters – in fact, experts in tertiary education have described this as ‘the best new college in Scotland’.
