This introduction at last gives a centre to a green, yet disparate, campus. A fluid spruce gridshell roof sails over and around existing rectilinear buildings including the library and Great Hall. With this bold juxtaposition come detailing problems that are resolved elegantly and individually: an undoubted labour of love.
The opening-up of the old library works particularly well, with views through and across the new and existing spaces, which now read as one.
The fine 400-seat lecture theatre is unusual, offering generous rotating chairs to promote intimate participation between students or delegates. The Forum is extremely popular with students and staff. This is architecture helping give a strong message that this university has finally arrived.
