This is a sensitive regeneration of an heroic Grade II* listed building that had become maligned due to the problems associated with badly maintained mass social housing.
The client and the architects consulted one of the original architects, who was surprisingly open to change, and have addressed all the contradictory demands of conservation and commerce.
Despite the further constraints of UK building standards, the team has worked with stakeholders English Heritage to find a balance between retaining its Brutalist language while changing public perception of the building.
New iridescent coloured panels give the street frontage a changing face across the day while not challenging the original architecture. The result is visually striking without losing any of the original Park Hill look – the 'streets in the sky' live on.
