Villa in the Var

Villa Jones is beautifully situated on a south-facing hillside overlooking the valley of the Var. All the spaces in the villa are strung out behind a unifying pergola, creating a long axis - from the fireplace of the snug winter sitting room at the west, to the shower at the end of the swimming pool at the east. The villa is rooted in the local vernacular, albeit with a modern edge, which is why it was so unpopular with the local planners, a problem finally solved when the Bâtiments de France (the French equivalent of English Heritage) gave it their support. With good reason, for this rustic villa is a distinguished contemporary example in a long tradition aspiring to achieve the bucolic ideal.
