The RIBA CABE Public Space Award

The RIBA CABE Public Space Award

The RIBA and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) have launched a new award to find the best examples of public space. The new prize, part of the RIBA Awards, is sponsored by CABE.

The scheme must feature publicly accessible external space. It may be green or grey, urban or rural, privately or publicly owned, designed or re-designed and re-furbished for public use.

The 2008 jury includes Sarah Gaventa Director of CABE Space, Tony Edwards of Place and Tony Chapman, Head of Awards at the RIBA. The award includes a prize of £5,000 to be presented to the winning team at the Stirling Prize Dinner on Saturday 11 October.

The RIBA’s President Sunand Prasad said, ‘The quality of public space, no less than the quality of buildings, defines the character of the places we inhabit. Unfortunately the design of spaces in between buildings has too often been neglected. The best examples of such design tend to arise from creative collaboration such as that between architects, landscape architects, urban designers, artists and highway engineers. This award, by recognising this hugely important area of design, will help raise consciousness about place making and the value of public space.'
