In 2008, Aedas announced their intention to partner with the RIBA to create an annual scholarship to support one student enrolled in a postgraduate degree (for a period of 12 months) in Architecture in a School of Architecture validated by the RIBA in the UK or abroad.

The scholarship is in memory of Stephen James Williams, a past Director of Aedas.

The RIBA encourages the promotion of education and research, and the relief of poverty of those persons engaged in, or who are preparing to enter, the profession of Architecture. As such, this initiative by Aedas and the Stephen Williams family is extremely welcome.

One annual scholarship of £5,000 will support one student for a period of postgraduate studies of up to 12 months in the UK or abroad. If the recipient of the Scholarship is to enrol in a School of Architecture in a country where Aedas has an office, Aedas will try to ensure that a representative from said office is available to support and/or mentor the student.

Applicants must have graduated from a Part 1 programme validated by the RIBA in the UK and be UK residents.

Applicants must be enrolled, or have been granted a placement offer, in a Masters degree (12 months) in Architecture or an architecturally related field in a School of Architecture validated by the RIBA in the UK or abroad, or the second and final year of any Part 2 programme in a School of Architecture validated by the RIBA in the UK.

This scholarship aims to support architectural students towards their postgraduate studies in the field of Architecture. Although the emphasis will be on supporting students with exceptional talent who need funding for their studies in any area of Architecture, preference is given to students interested, or conducting research, in the following areas:

  • Mentoring or Coaching in the field of Architecture and/or Architecture education;
  • The theory and/or design of the built environment of education and/or cultural spaces, including schools, colleges, museums, foundations, etc.

Preference will be given to applicants who are RIBA members.

Employees of the RIBA, Aedas, trustees or members of the ETFC will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 23 March 2009.

All applications are treated in confidence.
