HomeWise - Better homes for Britain

HomeWise at Lib Dem Party Conference

After last week's fantastic launch, the HomeWise campaign headed to Birmingham on Monday for the Liberal Democrat Party Conference.

Amidst the bustle of activists, politicians and journalists, RIBA's new President, Angela Brady, got the chance to promote the campaign to Andrew Stunell MP, the Communities Minister, as well as other Lib Dem MPs.

We received an enthusiastic response and more MPs have committed to signing a parliamentary motion in support of HomeWise. The motion also calls on the Government to work with industry to help provide better consumer information about housing design.

We hosted a lively public meeting to debate so-called 'Legoland homes' with a distinguished panel of experts including Andrew Stunell MP, Lord Taylor of Goss Moor (Chair of the National Housing Federation), Councillor Richard Kemp (Vice-Chair of the Local Government Association) and Dr Tim Leunig (Chief Economist of the think tank CentreForum).

Angela Brady chaired the wide-ranging discussion that touched on the supply of land, the quality of new-build housing, the current debate over changes to the planning system and the design and size of homes.

Next week the campaign will be going North to Liverpool for Labour Party Conference, where we will be hosting an event with speakers including Shadow Communities Minister Jack Dromey, London Mayoral Candidate Ken Livingstone and encouraging even more MPs to be HomeWise.
