About the Periodicals Collection

Through the British Architectural Library, the RIBA aims to collect the world's major architectural journals, whether these are commercial, official or academic publications. These growing holdings date back to the mid-19th century and include full sets of 'Architectural Review', 'The Builder', 'RIBA Journal' and 'Country Life'. Around 2,000 titles are held as part of the collections of the RIBA, over 600 of which are current journals. Anyone can come and access the collection by visiting the Library, while some are available freely as e-journals.

What subjects are covered?

The periodicals cover all aspects of architecture and a range of subjects in related fields, including:

  • building construction, technology and law
  • environmental planning and green building
  • interior design
  • landscape architecture
  • planning
  • building studies

What is collected?

The Library aims to reflect the full range of journals published within the UK. For journals published outside the UK, the Library subscribes to representative examples in as many languages and from as many countries as is feasible. The collection is an important resource for research and a record of the latest developments in architecture.

Staff at the Library have been indexing articles in many architectural publications since the early 1900s. Members of the public can search these records in the online catalogue.
