From 1881, the year Harry Lemere joined the company, detailed records of each commission were kept in ledgers, known as daybooks. Commissions were also recorded by category (e.g. architects and decorators) and listed alphabetically in a series of subject indexes. Each negative had a unique number that could be referenced in the daybooks and subject indexes.
