German propaganda accused the British of not burying Muslim war dead according to their religion. To counter this, a military cemetery for fallen Muslim soldiers was built at Woking – a town that was also home to the only purpose-built mosque in the country. Photographs were taken for the India Office, whose surveyor, T. Herbert Winney, had designed the new cemetery.
