Selfridges department store, by various architects including Sir John Burnet & Tait, opened on Oxford Street in 1909. Gordon Selfridge was an experienced retailer, having managed the Chicago department store of Marshall Field & Co. The building's steel frame, embellished with giant classical columns, made possible the great glazed windows and open plan interior.
