Negative with painted-out sky
Houses, Port Sunlight, Wirral, 1896
© English Heritage: BL13547/021 [negative]

Opaque ink has been applied to this negative. The sky has been rendered flat and even-coloured, and extraneous details may have been painted out. The subject of the photograph is the houses recently built for Sunlight Soap factory workers. The painting out has had the effect of framing the buildings and making them more prominent. This may have been done with publication in mind.
