This design is for an altar frontal for St Wilfrid, Cantley, Yorkshire, which Comper restored and furnished in 1893-94. Comper, a pupil of Bodley, was his equal as a designer of patterns and textiles. However, as his restoration of St Wilfrid demonstrates, he designed furnishings on the basis of historical scholarship, something largely alien to Bodley. He also rejected Bodley's muted Aesthetic Movement palette in favour of clear tones.
