Bodley was one of the assessors in the 1902-03 competition for the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool. Because the winner, Giles Scott – son of Bodley's old friend George Gilbert Scott, Jr – was so young, Bodley was appointed joint architect. Although the Lady Chapel, the first part of the cathedral to be completed, was entirely by Scott, he adapted a design by Bodley for its reredos.
