After his partnership with Bodley was dissolved in 1897, Garner worked almost exclusively for Roman Catholic patrons. His greatest commission was the choir of the church at the Benedictine abbey and school at Downside. It was a tricky project, as Garner had to fit the choir between an apse and transepts built in the 1870s and 1880s.
