Crabtree was first employed by the John Lewis Partnership in 1930, specifically to do research work in connection with the rebuilding of Peter Jones. Along with his former tutor, C.H. Reilly (who had introduced him to John Lewis), Crabtree later became responsible for the design and appearance of the building. Slater & Moberley carried out the working drawings and dealt with contractual matters.
