Alec Simpson was a wholesaler who opened his first department store in 1935. To design it, he commissioned Joseph Emberton, who had worked with Percy Westwood. Client and architect worked closely together on the design of the shop and tried to combine functional qualities with elegance. The final concept, with its emphasis on the horizontal, was inspired by German examples.
