Today, many housing projects provide communal spaces and amenities for residents. These shared spaces allow for interaction and contribute to a sense of mutual ownership and responsibility. They may well be more effective than locks and bars in creating peace of mind, and indeed the creation of so-called 'gated communities' has often proved counter productive.

Amenities for residents vary from specific facilities, such as swimming pools, that are not otherwise available in the local area, to open spaces – like gardens – where people can socialise and relax.
