This drawing shows a grille, known as a 'mashrabiya', made of carved wood. These grilles were incorporated into the windows and exterior walls of many domestic buildings in Cairo. They provided shade from the sun, while also allowing air to pass through freely from outside, creating a cool, calm, private interior.
