Park Hill, Sheffield

This large modernist estate, designed by Ivor Smith and Jack Lynn in 1961 with nearly 1000 flats, was a bold attempt to maintain the communal benefits of street life, with 'streets-in-the-sky' along which milk floats could drive. However many residents felt isolated in the large blocks and the scheme is being redeveloped, with new public spaces and amenities such as allotments to connect it to the city.
