The castle is a delightful folly with a wealth of ornament and concrete blocks shaped to look like stone. The building is thought to be the earliest surviving example of the use of prefabricated concrete.
 
This photograph illustrates some of the Elizabethan strapwork recreated in concrete in 1851. Seventeen different types of experimental concrete and cement were used on the building.
