Salt's Mill first opened in 1853, thanks to the philanthropic work of Titus Salt, who built an entire village around the textile mill to house, educate and care for its 3,000 workers and their families. During the second half of the 20th century the textile industry went in to decline, and by the 1980s Salt's Mill was virtually redundant. Its rescue came in the form of Jonathan Silver, who purchased the mill in 1987 and transformed the building into office space and galleries.
