Situated at a busy street intersection, Turnpike Lane uses the 'brick box and concrete lid' model but also incorporates two tower elements, the most prominent being the ventilation shaft which acts as a local landmark. Unusually, the booking hall is some 12 feet below street level, allowing people to enter the station via the subway. Frank Pick considered Turnpike Lane his favourite station, due to its spatial relationship between the above ground buildings such as the booking hall, staff canteen and bus station to the rear.
