Redbridge station was first designed by Holden for the planned extension of the Central line in 1935. Occupying an island site so that buses could easily pick up and drop off passengers, one of the early designs included a ventilation tower that was to be built entirely of glass. Despite the tunnels being built, the station was not completed and opened until after the Second World War with the original design somewhat compromised due to restricted funds.
