The Heart of London

55 Broadway model

Architectural model of London Electric Railway Company offices, 55 Broadway

Model built by: W. Aumonier (fl.1900-1930)
Architect: Charles Holden (1875-1960) for Adams Holden & Pearson
Copyright: RIBA Library Drawings and Archives Collections

In the summer of 1927, Adams Holden & Pearson exhibited a quarter scale model of 55 Broadway (since lost), alongside the perspective of the building by Muirhead Bone. In both cases, the winged roundel symbol is shown at the seventh floor level instead of the 'Temple of the Winds' sculptures that appeared in the final design. Holden was criticised at the time for treating the sculptures as an afterthought.
